November 25, 2007

Sachin Tendulkar became the second-highest runmaker in test cricket when he made an unbeaten 32 as India moved purposefully towards victory in the first test against Pakistan in New Delhi.

Tendulkar needs another 771 to surpass Brian Lara at the top of the test scorers’ list.

India go into the final day needing only 32 more, with seven wickets in hand, to go one up in the three-match series.

They closed at 171 for three when bad light ended their bid to wrap up the game in four days.

Tendulkar (11,183) surpassed former Australian Allan Border’s 11,174 runs and now has only retired West Indian Brian Lara currently ahead of him with 11,953.

India’s chase for 203 was given a sound platform by opener Wasim Jaffer, who hit 53, and Sourav Ganguly (48 not out)

It was Jaffer’s ninth half-century as he put on 82 for the second wicket with Rahul Dravid before former captains Ganguly and Tendulkar added 78 in an unfinished fourth-wicket stand.

Shoaib Akhtar was Pakistan’s only penetrative bowler, taking three for 41 off 15 probing overs.

He sent back Dinesh Karthik (one) in his opening over before accounting for well-set Jaffer and Dravid, but lacked support on a low, slow wicket.

The match swung in India’s favor when left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan and part-time seamer Ganguly shared four wickets.

The tourists tottered from 212 for five to 247 all out
