January 19, 2008

Young Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma took the crucial wicket of Australian captain Ricky Ponting just before lunch on the fourth day of the third Test at the WACA Ground. Set 413 to win a world record 17th Test in succession, Australia were 268 for 8 at last update, still requiring a further 147 runs to complete the second biggest run chase in 131 years of Test cricket.

Only once has a bigger total than 413 been successfully chased in the fourth innings of a Test, when the West Indies made 418 for seven against Australia in Antigua in 2003. The previous best at the WACA is Australia’s 342 for eight against India in 1977, in the first Test between the two countries at the venue. Australia have not been beaten since losing to England at Trent Bridge in August, 2005, and they have not lost a home Test since going down to India in Adelaide in December 2003.

It was also India who snapped Australia’s previous record 16-Test winning streak when they notched up a memorable victory in Kolkata in 2001. Australia lead the series 2-0 and have already retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
