Zaheer Khan removed Vandort in the first over of the Sri Lankan innings. India having being bowled out for 329 needed to get some early wickets to put pressure on the Sri Lankan batting.

After a splendid start, the much fancied Indian batting order collapsed as India finished at 329. Ajantha Mendis finished with his first five wicket haul as he ended with figures of 6 for 117. Virender Sehwag remained undefeated on 201 as he did manage to take India to a respectable score of 329. Now it was again upto the bowlers to take the charge and bring back India in the series.
